Timișoara – A Weekend Getaway I’ll Always Keep Returning To/A Personal Travel Guide & Autumn Escape

 In October 2024, I took a road trip to Timișoara with my boyfriend — and it turned out to be an absolute hit! 

This charming city in western Romania has a population of around 250,000 and carries the nickname “Little Vienna” thanks to its rich history spanning over eight centuries and its breathtaking Baroque architecture. Beyond its beauty, Timișoara holds a pivotal place in history — it was right here in December 1989 that the revolution breaking Ceaușescu’s regime began. It was also a true pioneer of its era, becoming the first city in continental Europe to introduce electric street lighting back in 1884. 

That unique mix of rich history, European charm, and the fact that it’s just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Novi Sad makes it the ultimate spot for a spontaneous weekend escape. We packed just our backpacks, hopped into the car, and took off. We didn’t wait long at the border crossing, and as soon as we entered Romania, we stopped at a nearby gas station to buy the Rovinieta (vignette), since we had somehow overlooked buying it online. 

A quick tip for anyone driving: The vignette is mandatory and easiest to purchase right at the border or online beforehand. As for parking, it’s always best to choose an apartment that offers a private parking spot. 

 Our apartment was located just a 10-minute walk from the city center, decorated so tastefully and cozy that I honestly wanted to move in permanently. A huge plus for us was the self check-in lockbox at the entrance — a fairly standard feature these days, but so convenient since you don't have to coordinate arrival times with the host. 

We headed straight out to explore the heart of the city. The weather was gorgeous — absolutely perfect for walking. 

Our first stop was Union Square (Piața Unirii), the oldest town square designed in Baroque style. The pastel-colored facades, the open space, and the sweeping view stretching from the Roman Catholic Dome across to the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and the Baroque Palace simply take your breath away.

 From there, we continued toward Liberty Square (Piața Libertății), nestled between Victory Square and Union Square. Even though it's a pedestrian area, a streetcar line runs right through it. For a long time, this square served as the true center of the city, and it’s also known as the Red Square due to its distinctive red brick paving. It features the Statue of St. Mary and St. Nepomuk as well as the Old City Hall. 

I saved my personal favorite, Victory Square (Piața Victoriei), for last. Besides being lined with magnificent, historic buildings, it houses the National Opera and Theater at one end and the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral at the other. Between them lies a spacious pedestrian boulevard filled with vibrant flowerbeds and outdoor cafes, complete with the iconic Statue of the Capitoline Wolf (Romulus and Remus). 

Surrounding the square are souvenir shops, fast-food outlets, restaurants, and, of course, Starbucks. Right next to the cathedral lies the massive and stunning Roses Park (Parcul Rozelor). Even though it’s located in the very center of the city, it radiates tranquility and captures the true essence of autumn we all know and love. 

A lovely detour: A gentle walk through Roses Park leads directly to the banks of the Bega River, where you can take a peaceful break along the water while enjoying the golden autumn foliage. 

 The next day, before heading back home, we set aside a few hours to visit the Iulius Mall. We browsed through well known brand stores and spent an exceptionally long time in Primark. I was completely amazed by the sheer volume of autumn and Halloween items — decorations, scented candles, and so much more. In the hypermarket right next door, we picked up snacks and drinks that aren't available back home (or were significantly cheaper). 

The mall itself features a massive food court where you can find practically everything — from fast-food chains to home-style restaurants. We actually stumbled upon a Serbian restaurant right there, where the food was both super affordable and delicious — the perfect meal before hitting the road. After lunch, we took a stroll through the beautiful park located right within the Iulius Mall complex, and then popped into the nearby Starbucks. 

Even though coffee there is quite pricey, in my opinion, it’s 100% worth it because nowhere else can you get coffee quite like that. Naturally, I went with the Pumpkin Spice Latte — pure perfection! I couldn't resist their seasonal merchandise either, so I treated myself to a Starbucks Halloween tumbler featuring ghosts and pumpkins. It was a bit of a splurge, but it’s so high quality and cute that I just had to have it! 

We started our journey with just two basic backpacks, but returned with a trunk full of new finds, goodies, and shopping scores — but above all, with full hearts, beautiful memories, and the happiest feelings. Timișoara has officially become our favorite city for a quick escape from reality — a place where time moves a little slower and autumn feels truly magical. We already know this was just one of many trips there, and I can't wait until the next time we return.
